Chapter Six
Cohen’s heart thudded crazily with relief as Dom turned his eyes back onto the road. He closed his eyes, his body shaking from the rush of adrenaline. What he had done was crazy. Kip and Joshua, and the other omegas back in the dorms, would never believe it in a million years. Looking an alpha in the eye was unheard of, a challenge that no omega dared to make. And yet he had, and lived.
Slowly Cohen was realizing that Dom was not like the alphas in his home pack. Back there, omegas knew that their only job, their only reason for living, was to submit to an alpha. Omegas were objects, guarded jealously and for exclusive use of the alpha that was chosen for them. For some reason, knowing that this wasn’t the case, made Cohen even more nervous. Suddenly he was without a roadmap.
His eyes scanned Dom’s in wonder. He’d noticed the sculpted cheekbones and his strong jaw right away. And his dark curls. And the broad line of his shoulders. He couldn’t forget that. How was it possible that the alpha he felt so attracted to would also be so… kind? Cohen swallowed hard.
His life had been so lucky that he was sure it would have run out. But now, maybe it was possible that it was about to get even better. Every so often the breeze would change, and he’d catch a whiff of Dom. He wasn’t going to lie, the smell of the alpha, woodsy and powerful, brought sensations that Cohen didn’t know he had to the forefront. His asshole became slick as his cock hardened, readying itself to be taken by Dom. It was so strong that it even blocked out some of the pain from his leg. Thank god that it didn’t last long, or he’d probably be doing something embarrassing like pressing himself up against the alpha.
Suddenly, Cohen’s stomach growled. Their eyes met again and they both laughed.
“Sorry, usually I have dinner when I get home from work,” he said.
“We can’t really stop until we get to a safe house, but if you want, I can swing through McDonalds or something.”
Cohen shook his head.
“No, I can wait if you have food at the safe house.”
“Yeah I do. Most of it should be good, though it’s been a few years since anyone’s gone there,” Dom said. After a pause, “I don’t have a pack anymore either.”
Cohen saw his brow furrow and his lip set into a thin line. He wanted to ask, but wasn’t sure if he should. Finally, Dom spoke again.
“It was those hunters. They wiped out my pack. The two of them took on ten wolves. Easier than it looks when they play dirty and snipe them down with silver bullets. Half of them didn’t even know it. The bastards shot them in the back.”
“Is that why you were around tonight?” Cohen asked.
“Yeah, I was hunting them down. I didn’t expect to come across you though,” Dom said, giving a small smile.
